Community Involvement & Events

Midwest Security is proud to be recognized for its diverse community interests and contributions. Governed by a fundamental belief in community involvement, the Company is noted for its strong financial support and sponsorship of a variety of high-impact events. Many employees also volunteer their time and talent in service and civic organizations, including local school boards, Rotary Clubs, Kiwanis Clubs and Big Brothers and Big Sisters. Midwest Security is also involved in the United Way with not only its Corporate and employee contributions, but its participation in United Way events. Each year, the Company also sponsors an on-site blood drive to conveniently allow for employee involvement in yet another area of need within the community.

In addition to those noted above, Midwest Security Insurance Companies is known for its leadership, hosting and sponsoring of the following events:

UnitedHealthcare/American Cancer Society 5K Family Run/Walk

SchoolDistrictHolmen

In April of each year, thousands of enthusiastic runners, walkers and volunteers gather on the grounds of UnitedHealthcare's Midwest Security Insurance Companies location in Onalaska to show their support for the Annual UnitedHealthcare/American Cancer Society 5K Family Run/Walk. This annual event raises money to support American Cancer Society (ACS) activities in research, education, advocacy and service. Our 2007 Run/Walk brought in, before expenses, over $85,800 for the American Cancer Society to help those touched by cancer.

UnitedHealthcare is proud to be the corporate sponsor for this event. Company employees are actively involved in raising funds for the ACS throughout the year and donate countless hours to organizing the event.

Run/Walk 2008

The 2008 Run/Walk was held on April 20. For more information about Run/Walk 2008, see the Run/Walk page and call the American Cancer Society at 608-783-5001, option 102.

Boys & Girls Club of Greater La Crosse

Midwest Security and sister company UMR have been active on the Board of Directors of the Boys & Girls Club of Greater La Crosse for over 10 years. We also play a sponsorship role in the club's second largest annual fundraising event. For over 40 years, the local Boys & Girls Club has been serving youth with a long list of educational, social and activity based programs. There are several club locations throughout the area, including new facilities in West Salem and Holmen, Wisconsin. The La Crosse chapter has been a leader for years with innovative solutions like youth programs in area school facilities and neighborhoods with disadvantaged youth. The club piloted Wisconsin’s first ever Boys & Girls Club partnership with a college, Viterbo University in La Crosse. This joint effort resulted in fundraising for a beautiful $8 million facility that is used jointly by both organizations. The facility provides programs for area children that are supported by college students volunteering their time and talents.

La Crosse Symphony Orchestra (LSO)

Midwest Security and UMR provide sponsorship support for the La Crosse Symphony Orchestra. Whether through sponsorship of an LSO concert season performance held at Viterbo College or private concerts by guest artists with proceeds supporting the LSO, we help bring the experience of musical excellence to the Coulee Region.

Wisconsin Blood Center

Midwest Security and sister company UMR hold blood donation drives in the spring and fall each year at the Onalaska, Wisconsin office. Our average participation for each blood drive is approximately 55 employee donors. In April 2008, 75 registered employee blood donors participated.

Ongoing Food Drives

Three or four times a year, Midwest Security and UMR hold food drives to help food pantries provide for those in need. A few weeks prior to each food drive, we contact WAFER and the Onalaska Food Basket to determine what items are needed. Our employees bring in countless bags and boxes of non-perishable food and other needed items to help stock local food pantry shelves. Our most recent food drive for WAFER resulted in approximately 600 pounds of food donated by our employees.

Family & Children's Center

The Family & Children's Center is a regional, private, not-for-profit agency in La Crosse, Wisconsin that helps children and adults overcome social, emotional or mental challenges to enjoy a greater sense of well being in their families, homes and community. Each year, a representative from the center provides a list of individuals in need (adults and children) to Midwest Security/UMR several weeks prior to the winter holiday season. Our employees purchase and donate clothing, toys, and home and personal care items, and also give monetary donations, to assist the individuals on the list. In December 2007, we delivered three truckloads of employee donations to the Family & Children's center.

Salvation Army

We support the Salvation Army each year during the winter holiday season. The Salvation Army’s needs range from food items to children's toys. Employees donate non-perishable food and new or gently used items for those seeking assistance from the Salvation Army.

New Horizons

New Horizons, a domestic abuse shelter, requests specific items from us based on their current occupancy (adults, babies, toddlers, or teens). Residents of New Horizons often leave their homes with little or nothing, so we may receive requests for anything from diapers to makeup to cooking and cleaning supplies. Our generous employees always help answer the needs of New Horizons each holiday season.
