Company History

Midwestern National Insurance Corporation, a dually licensed Wisconsin property/casualty and life insurance company, is founded by Ronald W. Houser. The company initially insures personal lines property and casualty products in Wisconsin.

Began to market group health insurance products to small employers in Wisconsin.

Acquired Omnivest Life Insurance Company of Indianapolis, IN and changed its name to Midwest Security Life Insurance Company. Used Midwest Security Life Insurance Company to begin marketing group health insurance products in Indiana.

Created MNICare, Inc. a managed care utilization review firm.

Began to market group health insurance products in Illinois.

Midwest Security Life Insurance Company received a B+ initial A.M. Best rating. Established Midwest Employee Benefits, Inc., a third party administration company.

Began to market group health insurance products in Michigan, Minnesota and Iowa.

MNIC/Midwest Security began its corporate sponsorship of the American Cancer Society Run/Walk, then held in La Crosse, Wisconsin. It was the event's tenth year as a local fundraising event to benefit the American Cancer Society.

Acquired National Benefit Consultants, Inc. of Green Bay, WI and Thuro Services, Inc. of Milwaukee, WI, both third party administration companies. Midwest Security Life Insurance Company's A.M. Best rating upgraded to B++.

The name Midwest Security Insurance Companies was adopted concurrent with the company move to a new 66,000 square foot corporate headquarters in Onalaska, Wl. The property/casualty company changed its name from Midwestern National Insurance Corporation to Midwest Security Insurance Company. The third party administration company changed its name from Midwest Employee Benefits, Inc. to Midwest Security Administrators, Inc. The utilization review company changed its name from MNICare, Inc. to Midwest Security Care, Inc.

Midwest Security Care, Inc. is granted accreditation from the Utilization Review Accreditation Commission (URAC).

Acquired Lakeside Administrators, Inc., a third party administration company in Madison, WI.

Midwest Security Insurance Company, the property/casualty company, is sold in order to concentrate corporate resources and talents on insured and self-funded managed care medical plans.

The insurance organization is actively marketing in five Midwestern states: Wisconsin, Michigan, Illinois, Indiana and Iowa. The company employs 350 people in their Onalaska, WI home office and Green Bay, WI Regional Service office. In addition, the company has sales offices in Milwaukee WI, Detroit, MI and Chicago, IL.

Midwest Security Insurance Companies celebrated its 25th anniversary in the month of March. Began to market group health insurance products in the state of Ohio.

Established a new Regional Sales Office in Indiana.

Midwest Security purchased Benchmark Health Insurance Company and Benchmark Health Network of Rockford, Illinois from the SwedishAmerican Health System.

Established new regional office in Rockford, Illinois.

Midwest Security held its 20th Annual Midwest Security/American Cancer Society Family Run/Walk fundraiser, raising over $71,000.00 to help fight cancer, and assist cancer victims and their families.

Effective August 1, Midwest Security acquired the existing insured business of Preferred Partners, Kalamazoo, Michigan, a Third Party Administrator (TPA) that is wholly-owned by Borgess Health Alliance (BHA).

Attained record membership.

Introduced new Select Coverage group health PPO products.

Midwest Security's 21st Annual Family Run/Walk, held April 21, 2002, raised over $75,000.00 after expenses for the American Cancer Society to help those touched by cancer.

Midwest Security was acquired by UnitedHealthcare, a UnitedHealth Group company, on October 1st. The combined companies result in a strengthened regional and local market position, increasing customer access and choice. The expanded, complimentary product lines will enable optimal service to a growing customer base with diverse needs and demands. UnitedHealth Group is a publicly held, Fortune 100 company employing over 30,000 people nationwide and is traded on the NYSE (symbol UNH). UnitedHealthcare is based in Minnetonka, Minnesota.

A.M. Best upgraded its rating of Midwest Security's financial strength from B++ to an A- and predicted that the company would continue to increase market share.

The 22nd Annual Midwest Security Family Run/Walk, held on April 27, 2003, raised over $66,000.00 after expenses for the American Cancer Society. The employees at Midwest Security raised just over $20,000.00 via fundraising events and pledges, another company record.

On April 18, 2004, the 23rd Annual Midwest Security Family Run/Walk raised a total of over $80,000.00 before expenses for the American Cancer Society. Midwest Security's employees raised almost $19,000.00 of this total via fundraising events and pledges.

The 24th annual Midwest Security/American Cancer Society 5K Family Run/Walk took place on April 17, 2005. The event brought in over $92,000 before expenses for the American Cancer Society. Midwest Security employee teams raised an all-time high of over $25,000 from fundraisers and pledges.

Midwest Security Life Insurance Company and Midwest Security Administrators began marketing benefit plans and TPA services in Nebraska for the first time.

Midwest Security Administrators created a dedicated Account Executive - Key Accounts position for the state of Michigan.

In 2007, the Midwest Security/American Cancer Society Family Run/Walk was renamed the UnitedHealthcare/American Cancer Society Family Run/Walk, recognizing Midwest Security's parent company, UnitedHealthcare. The event was held April 22, 2007 and raised over $85,800 before expenses for the American Cancer Society. The 27th Annual American Cancer Society/UnitedHealthcare Family Run/Walk, held on April 20 on the Midwest Security grounds in Onalaska, Wisconsin, raised over $106,000 before expenses to support the American Cancer Society's fight against cancer - a new record for this event! Once again, UnitedHealthcare's Midwest Security employees were the top fundraising team, raising over $21,300. Over 60 area corporate teams and nearly 1,600 registered runners and walkers participated.

In May 2008, Midwest Security Administrators announced that it was joining with United Medical Resources and Fiserv Health to become UMR, the national TPA business line for UnitedHealthcare. UMR becomes a single national business unit providing integrated health benefit management for self-funded, dental, vision, disability and medical plans. As UMR, Midwest Security Administrators, Fiserv Health, and United Medical Resources will unify their focus to deliver on the organization's five points of value: cost savings, flexibility, caring service, intelligent technology, and unique solutions for unique businesses.
